Course Description

OVERVIEW

This course equips Deans, Directors, Program Managers, and Program Coordinators with a comprehensive repertoire of tools to operate student success cohorts, learning communities, and cultural centers. As a result of participating in this course, educators will be able to

(1) conceptualize and intricately develop student equity programs,

(2) strategically harmonize equity initiatives with institutional goals and measurable outcomes,

(3) elevate operational effectiveness while strategically executing programs, and

(4) ensure succession planning and sustainable growth of programs.

 

REQUIREMENTS
Access to a computer with an internet connection.
Fluent/advanced level of English required.

 

COURSE DURATION?
You will have 30 days to complete each of the 4 modules of this training. Each module requires a 3-4 hour commitment (including lectures, discussion boards, readings).

 

WHO CAN JOIN?
CORA (Center for Organizational Responsibility and Advancement) offers all educators the LatinX Ally Program. This online course is also suitable for educational support staff, such as advisors, student service officers, and instructional faculty.

Curriculum

Welcome to the professional development program on Implicit Bias. You will have 30 days to complete this training, with learners engaging in activities over the course of five modules. Each module requires a 3-4 hour commitment (including lectures, discussion boards, readings).
Following the completion of each activity, you will need to mark the activity as “Complete”.
To complete the program, learners must complete the following activities:

1. Complete PRE-ASSESSMENT and POST ASSESSMENT.

2. Review all video modules – There are four modules in all. Our learning management system allows participants and faculty to review learner progress in completing video modules.

3. Read the assigned readings – There are assigned readings that are aligned with each of the modules. It is an expectation that readings will be completed before reviewing the module. The readings are comprehensive in nature, as such, we recommend planning ahead to ensure readings are completed on schedule. Comprehension of material will be gauged through the live interactive sessions.

4. Attend the live video sessions – Learners will have access to course faculty during a live interactive session. This is an opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue that is solution-oriented. It is expected that all learners will attend at least one live session. Live sessions will be recorded and posted for those who are unable to attend.

5. Complete short quizzes – Following each recorded presentation you will complete a brief quiz assessing your understanding of the material. Quizzes can be completed an unlimited number of times. It is recommend that you re-take quizzes until you correctly answer all questions.

6. Participate in asynchronous discussion forums. – As you complete each module, we encourage you to identify questions, comments, and reactions to the material as well as relevant resources and post them in the discussion forums. This is an opportunity for faculty and peers to engage in dialogue and knowledge sharing.

About Instructor

Name: Dr. Jonathan Henderson

Dr. Jonathan Henderson is a dynamic and accomplished instructional designer, professor, and researcher with over a decade of experience advancing equity in higher education. He currently serves as the Assistant Professor/Professional Development Faculty Coordinator at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista, California, where he leads faculty professional learning initiatives and is involved in faculty senate leadership. Prior to joining Southwestern College, Jonathan was a Senior Analyst at the Anti-Racism Diversity Inclusion (ARDI) unit within the County of Los Angeles Chief Executive Office, where he helped lead DEI efforts within county government.
Jonathan made significant contributions as Regional Coordinator for the Umoja Community Education Foundation, where he oversaw the growth and development of Umoja Programs in San Diego County and 68 partner colleges and universities across California and Washington State. He also served as the inaugural Program Director for The Rose Black Resource Center; a Black cultural center based at CSU Dominguez Hills.
With a wealth of experience in instruction, Jonathan has taught courses in Sociology, Labor Studies, Counseling, Cross Cultural Studies, and Africana Studies within the California Community Colleges and California State University systems. He is also an accomplished qualitative researcher, having served as a Research Associate for the Community College Equity Assessment Lab (CCEAL), led by Dr. Frank Harris III, Dr. Luke Wood, and Dr. Marissa Vasquez.
Jonathan is a proud community college and CSU alumnus. He holds an A.A. degree in Liberal Arts from MiraCosta College, B.A. and M.A. degrees in Sociology from CSU Dominguez Hills, and an Ed.D. in Community College Leadership from San Diego State University.

Name: Dr. Krystal Henderson

Dr. Krystal Henderson is a passionate mentor and educator with a profound commitment to economic justice and wellbeing for Black people. With 15+ years of experience, she brings a unique perspective, having successfully built her own business and supporting BIPOC business owners in their entrepreneurial journeys. Her research focuses on mentorship, equity in education and social services, and uplifting Black girls and women.
Throughout her career, Dr. K has held diverse roles spanning all levels of organizations, from serving as the Board President of a nonprofit to Dean at a multi-college community college district, as well as fulfilling roles as a case manager and research assistant. In 2020, she responded to a resounding need and founded Henderson Professional Mentorship Group with a mission to support Black professionals during the challenges of the pandemic. As the community faces the impact of inflation and struggles to meet basic needs, her services have evolved to vital business mentorship, as entrepreneurship transforms lives.
Dr. K holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at Loyola Marymount University, Educational Leadership from Boston College, and B.A.s in African American Studies and Women Studies from the University of California, Riverside; showcasing her dedication to continuous learning and academic achievement. With her extensive knowledge, practical experience, and compassionate approach, she is dedicated to empowering her clients and helping them thrive in their business endeavors.
